ORTHODONTICS

More information

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a special field of dentistry that treats problems with the position, alignment or spacing of the teeth. It doesn’t just create straighter, nicer looking teeth. Poor alignment can affect chewing, speech and facial appearance.

How do I know if I need orthodontic treatments?

You’ll see it in your smile: protruding or crowded teeth, obvious gaps, overbites that affect the appearance of your jaw.
Less obvious signs are frequent biting of the cheek and palate, tendency to breathe through the mouth, and if teeth don’t “meet” when you close your mouth.

What’s the best age to get orthodontic treatments?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child who needs braces or retainers should ideally seek treatment when he is seven. At this age, some permanent teeth have erupted, giving a clearer and more accurate picture of the dental problem. It is generally easier to correct overbites and other major alignment issues in childhood.
However, many adults to get braces. The latest orthodontics treatments are very effective. There are also new materials that are “clear” and practically invisible, which are ideal for those who are self-conscious about their appearance.

What are the new “invisible” orthodontic treatments?

Dr. FirasOrsman offers Invisalign and eCLigner, which can correct your teeth position using clear aligners.

Here are some benefits:

  • The clear aligners are made of a transparent material that is barely noticeable. It’s a good choice for people who are concerned about how they will look with metal braces.
  • They can be removed before meals or before you brush and floss your teeth. This makes oral hygiene much easier, and lets you enjoy any kind of food you want.
  • They are made of a smooth plastic that won’t irritate your gums or cheeks.

Invisalign and eCligner offer several advantages, especially for adults who want straighter teeth and a better smile, but are concerned by the discomfort or appearance.
However, some alignment and overbite issues can’t be corrected with invisible aligners. It’s best to go in for a personal consultation to find out if you’re a good candidate.

Do orthodontic treatments hurt?

The newer braces are much more comfortable than they used to be! New wires and materials move teeth more gently and effectively, and don’t catch on the mouth and inner palate.
You may experience some soreness and sensitivity when you first get used to your braces or during the periodic adjustments, but this lasts only a few days and can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

How long does a treatment take?

This depends on your particular case – your age, the severity of your case, and how diligent you are about returning for appointments! However, most orthodontic treatments will take about 6 months to 2 and ½ years.

Will I need to make big changes in my diet and lifestyle?

You may have to avoid food that can damage your braces (like caramel, bubble gum, corn on the cob and hard candy), but otherwise you can eat whatever you like! You can still play sports, mouth instruments, and all other activities that give you pleasure and entertainment.
The biggest change is that you will need to take extra care of your dental hygiene. Brushing your teeth and flossing are more important but also more challenging. Your dentist can give you more advice on how to care for your teeth while you’re wearing braces.
