“Teeth Whitening”

What is teeth whitening?

Your teeth can become stained or discolored because of smoking, food (ex: coffee, tea and wine) and the natural thinning of enamel because of age. Some people also have genetically yellowish or grayish teeth.

Dentists can offer tooth whitening treatments that can remove stains or discoloration, and make teeth look significantly whiter and brighter.

What are the benefits of professional teeth whitening?

Whitening toothpastes or home remedies like baking soda can’t remove deep stains or discoloration. Some home remedies that involve very acidic mixtures like lemon juice can even damage the teeth. Professional teeth whitening done by trained dentists like Dr. Firaz are safe and effective.

What are the types of teeth whitening treatments?

Professional bleaching involves a special whitening product that is applied on your teeth using a special tray that fits into your mouth. Your gums are protected by a shield and gel.

During laser whitening, your teeth are coated with a bleaching product that is activated by a laser that is directed towards the area. Lasers yield very dramatic results of up to five or six shades lighter.

Will teeth whitening hurt?

No! The procedure is very comfortable and doesn’t require anesthesia. You may experience some teeth sensitivity after the treatment, so avoid extremely hot or cold foods and drinks for the first few days.

If you have naturally sensitive teeth, your dentist can adjust the peroxide levels. You may need more sessions to get the shade you want, but the sessions will be more comfortable for you.

How long will it take to see the results?

This varies on a case-to-case basis. You may need more than one session to get the shade that you want, especially if you have very deep stains and discoloration. At your first appointment, Dr. Firas will explain the course of your treatment so you have clear expectations from the very beginning.

How long will the results last?

If you take care of your teeth, and avoid food and drinks that are known to stain teeth, you will only need a touch-up treatment once every year. However, if you are a smoker or drink a lot of coffee, tea or wine, the discoloration will return much faster.

Can I have my teeth whitened even if I’ve had fillings or other dental treatments?

Teeth whitening treatments will not damage fillings, veneers, bridges, or crowns. However, these artificial teeth will not lighten. If you’ve had a dramatic change in shade, you may need to replace these to match your brighter smile.
