Dental Extractions FAQ

What is dental extraction?

Ideally your permanent teeth should last a lifetime. However, in some cases your dentist may recommend a dental extraction. The reasons include:

  • Bad decay and infection that can’t be treated with a dental filling or a root canal
  • A crowded mouth that requires teeth to be removed as part of orthodontic treatment
  • Periodontal or gum disease

Are dental extractions safe?

Yes. This is a very common and standard dental procedure. However, you do need to take steps to prevent infection. Avoid smoking and take Vitamin C. If you have a pre-existing medical condition that may affect your body’s ability to heal or fight bacteria, you may be given a course of antibiotics right before your extraction.  Always inform your dentist of your medical history.
